RMC Helps Los Angeles County Get $25M Grant from DWR
On Wednesday, July 23, 2008, the California Department of Water Resources presented a $25 million check to the Greater Los Angeles County Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) planning effort to fund 14 projects that reduce the region’s dependence on imported water, improve water quality in rivers and at its beaches, and restore habitat in key locations. The Greater Los Angeles County region is home to 10.5 million people—nearly one-third of California’s population—and is facing severe water supply, water quality, habitat and open space challenges.
RMC played an instrumental role in helping the County secure this grant which is funded by Proposition 50, Chapter 8. Beginning in 2005, RMC helped organize dozens of stakeholders into committees to develop an integrated approach to regional water planning and collaboration. RMC compiled water resource, water quality and recycled water information from watersheds draining into Santa Monica Bay, facilitated a process to document over 1,000 potential water management projects and developed tools to help the region identify priority projects for funding. RMC compiled this information and subsequently turned it into a successful grant application. Today, RMC is continuing to support the Los Angeles region’s IRWM planning efforts. RMC is a recognized leader in integrated regional water management planning in California. During the first funding phase for Proposition 50, Chapter 8 Integrated Regional Water Management Planning Implementation Grants, RMC secured funding for six regions, totaling $112.5 million. In fact, RMC had a 100% success rate, preparing grant applications for 6 clients, each of which was awarded grant funding. RMC-led efforts accounted for 37% of the total money allocated in the State of California. A water bond targeted for the November 2008 ballot may allocate another $2 billion more to the State’s IRWM program.
